Issues typically start out with ‘the network is slow’!

It then becomes the responsibility of the network team to either prove or disprove this assumption and then provide a meaningful response to that comment.
TruView can provide the answers to where the problem lies. 

For most network teams it then the response falls into the category of MTTI - Mean Time to Innocence!

TruView is a live 24/7 monitoring solution continually updating the ’state of the environment’ and answers can usually be found within a couple of minutes.

Whilst TruView can generate reports on any screen on the system in a daily, weekly or monthly cycle the true power comes with the real-time data.

Following is a common triage example.

Example 1 - The Network is Slow

From the graphic we can see that the Dallas users have a network delay issue.

After clicking on the Dallas site a ’site view’ is available and we can see from our correlated Flow, SNMP and Packet views is that Oracle and MS-SQL are causing Network Delays through contention.

In this instance databases are being accessed directly from a site and not the datacentre, thus impacting the WAN link.

The overlay shows lots of retransmissions (server in this case) which suggests packet loss.

Clicking into 3 horizontal bars on the the Data Rate graphic the resultant view shows the mix of traffic impacting the WAN link. Additionally all the connections to the Oracle application can be identified for corrective action. The problem has been identified with TruView through its fault domain isolation methodology and the root cause of the problem has been determined in this case.

At times understanding further understand impact of this latency scrolling down on the site page TruView shows the main applications being affected by Network Delay and details other delays per user. From this point full details of the specific user can be viewed and if required packets can be downloaded for evidence.

Example 2 - The Application is Slow

Is this example it can be seen from the initial summary screen that London users are experiencing application issues. This time the network team can prove it's 'not the network' but also in this example evidence of the where the problem is located can be isolated. 

After clicking on the London site a ’site view’ is available and we can see from our correlated Flow, SNMP and Packet views that the applications (primarily VNS-ERP) are being impacted by Application delay.

Next step is to drill into the application and see the affected users to understand the details of the impact.

A flow diagram of the application traversing across the web layer to the database layer details exactly where the delays are occurring. Combinations of delays could easily been seen here. Not all problems are this easy to breakdown, but with good graphical help triaging exact delays can be done quickly and easily. On average the EURT for the User at is 5.3s which covers 39 transactions at the VNS-ERP web application and 1.8s which covers 1k transactions at the Oracle DB end.

Drilling into the application from a web server perspective we can see exactly where the delay occurs from the bounce diagram. The web server taking 48s to respond from a specific request can be identified. The root cause at this point is still to be identified from a web server perspective but TruView has provided the exact URL to start investigating. Sometimes the only way to find this is by looking at the specific code or resources on the web server.

Additionally we can see the delay from the 'Describe' command issued to the Oracle database. This provides the users the exact information for the DB team.
